Botulinum Toxin Type A
BOTOX® injection is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of the wrinkles and unsightly facial lines that are caused by over activity of facial muscles (e.g. frown lines, horizontal forehead furrows and “crow’s feet” around the eyes).
The toxin is injected into the overactive muscle or the skin overlying it. It works by temporarily and partially weakening the muscle. As a result the face adopts a more relaxed and pleasant appearance and the wrinkles/lines become smoother or disappear altogether. BOTOX® is usually administered without the use of an anaesthetic and usually very little pain or discomfort is felt. The injections only take a few minutes. The initial effects of treatment become apparent within 2-3 days, the maximum effect usually being reached by 1-2 weeks. On average the effects of each procedure will last 3-6 months after which a further course of treatment can be given if a continued effect is required.
Side effects can occur, but are usually minor and almost always reversible. They include bruising or swelling at the injection site, localised mild pain and headache.
